About Anton
I am Anton, a native Russian speaker based in Auckland. I have spent my working life between two worlds: academia and international business. I hold a PhD in Economics and dual master's degrees in International Business and Corporate Law, and I spent twelve years at MGIMO in Moscow as Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, teaching future diplomats and international business students.
Alongside that I translated for World Bank projects, coached UN staff and diplomatic mission members in Russian, and more recently worked as a Senior Manager at Deloitte here in New Zealand. That mix is why my lessons rarely feel like a language class alone: I can explain how a contract clause, a negotiation or an ordinary Moscow conversation actually works, not just how the grammar is put together.
I have been tutoring privately since 2004 because I like the moment when a student stops translating in their head and simply speaks. Russian has a reputation for being impossible. It is not. It is a logical language, and with the right sequence of steps most people get much further, much faster, than they expect.
I am patient with mistakes, I do not lecture, and I adapt to the way you learn best. Whether you are learning for work, for family, for travel or for a TORFL certificate, we will map out the route together and stay honest about your progress along the way.

Russian
I teach Russian as a foreign language and have been doing it since 2004, with more than 150 students so far, from complete beginners to diplomats and company executives.
Every course starts with a short diagnostic conversation: your goal, your deadline and your honest starting point. From there I build a personalized program instead of following a textbook page by page. Beginners work with my Fast-Track Beginner method, built around high-frequency vocabulary and functional grammar, so you can hold a real conversation early rather than memorizing declension tables in isolation. Anything tricky is explained in clear English first, then practiced in Russian.
Lessons run 60 or 90 minutes, once or twice a week, online or face to face at my place on the North Shore in Auckland. Most students book a 50 to 100 hour trajectory with clear milestones, but single lessons and short intensives before a trip or an exam also work well.
What I cover:
- General Russian from zero to advanced: pronunciation, the case system, verbs of motion, aspect and everyday conversation
- TORFL preparation (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language), all levels, including exam format, timing and mock papers
- Business and diplomatic Russian: finance, law, international relations, meetings, negotiations and correspondence
- Reading and writing for heritage learners and children from Russian-speaking families
- Translation practice for professionals who work with Russian documents
My background: native Russian speaker with a PhD in Economics and 12 years as Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at MGIMO in Moscow, where I published methodological guidelines for teaching Russian and designed assessment and examination materials. I have coached UN staff and diplomatic mission members in Russian, and worked as a Russian to English translator on World Bank projects.
