About Chunyu
I'm Joyce, a native Mandarin speaker born and raised in Shanghai, now living in Austin, Texas. I hold a master's degree from New York University, where I also completed 34 hours of formal pedagogy training, including coursework specifically on teaching online and keeping virtual lessons interactive. I've taught literature at the university level in New York, and I work professionally as a writer and editor, so language, how it works and how to explain it clearly, is both my job and the thing I love most.
Outside of teaching, I read, ride my motorcycle, and play with my dog. My students would tell you I'm patient, organized, and genuinely curious about their lives, because the fastest way to learn a language is to talk about what you love.

My lessons are conversations, not lectures. We'll spend most of our time actually speaking Mandarin, about your work, your travels, the films you want to understand, and I'll build the grammar, vocabulary, and tone practice around topics you genuinely care about. For complete beginners, I explain everything in fluent English: pinyin, the four tones, and how Chinese sentences really work, without jargon or overwhelm. You'll say your first useful sentences in our very first lesson.
For intermediate and advanced learners, I bring something most tutors can't: a professional background in writing and editing, and experience teaching literature at the university level in New York. If you want to move past textbook Chinese into reading, writing, and expressing real ideas, that's my specialty.
Every lesson is planned for you specifically, no recycled worksheets. We start with a free 15-minute video consultation to discuss your goals and level, then design your plan together.

Details
The first 15-minute video consultation is free; we'll discuss your goals and current level and design your learning plan. Regular lessons are 60 minutes. The hourly rate is the same for all levels, from beginner to advanced, and includes personalized lesson planning and materials. No textbook purchase required. Lesson packages (5 or 10 hours) are pre-paid and offer a small discount; package hours are valid for six months. Please give at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule or cancel; lessons canceled with less notice are charged in full. For in-person lessons in the Austin area, a $15 transportation fee applies per session.
