About Luna

Hello and welcome! My name is Luna Tomy Gomez, and I'm thrilled to share not only the Spanish language with you but also the rich tapestry of cultures that have shaped my life.

Born in the mountaintop city of Bogota Colombia, in South America, I came to the United States at the age of six. This early relocation ignited my fascination with languages and cultures, setting me on a path of discovery and education.

I pursued my passion for languages at Queens College in New York, where I delved into the intricate world of Comparative Literature, focusing on Spanish and English. This experience deepened my appreciation for the nuances of language and its power to connect people across cultures. Currently, I am on the cusp of completing my bachelor's degree in Communications at UNLV, further broadening my understanding of human interactions and the media that facilitate them.

My personal life is a testament to the beauty of cultural diversity. I am a proud mother of three wonderful children, navigating the joys and challenges of homeschooling my oldest. My entrepreneurial spirit led me to run my own doula business, supporting families during one of the most transformative experiences of their lives and running successful childbirth education classes in both Spanish and English. This role not only underscores my commitment to nurturing and care but also mirrors my approach to teaching — patient, supportive, and empathetic.

I've mastered the art of juggling multiple responsibilities - from scheduling and coordinating to supporting families with compassionate care. It's a realm where meticulous organization is not just valued but vital.

Travel has been an integral part of my life, allowing me to immerse myself in a myriad of cultures and perspectives. These experiences have enriched my understanding of the world, making me comfortable and adept at navigating diverse cultural landscapes. My family life, shared with my husband of Chinese Indonesian heritage, is a daily celebration of cross-cultural exchange and understanding.

I bring to my teaching a deep-rooted love for the Spanish language, enriched by personal experiences that span continents. Whether you are embarking on learning Spanish for the first time or looking to deepen your understanding, I am here to guide you through this journey with professionalism, empathy, and a genuine passion for fostering intercultural connections. Join me in discovering not just a language, but a world of possibilities.

A few points to be aware of regarding my approach to tutoring, and the goals that I set out to achieve throughout our time together you will:

-Develop basic communication skills in Spanish, including speaking and listening comprehension.

-Build vocabulary and grammar knowledge to construct simple sentences and engage in basic conversations.

-Develop reading and writing skills in Spanish, including the ability to comprehend basic texts and write short compositions.

-Gain cultural awareness and understanding of Spanish-speaking countries and their customs, traditions, and daily life.

As a tutor, my teaching method revolves around creating a dynamic and interactive learning environment that caters to the individual needs and learning styles of my students. I believe in employing a communicative approach, where students actively engage in real-life language scenarios to enhance their language proficiency. This includes a combination of speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities, supplemented with multimedia resources such as videos, audio recordings, and authentic texts to provide diverse learning experiences. Additionally, I incorporate task-based learning and experiential activities to encourage student participation and foster a deeper understanding of the language and culture.

A typical lesson plan begins with a brief review of previous material to reinforce learning and build upon existing knowledge. Next, I introduce new vocabulary and grammar concepts through interactive activities and multimedia resources, ensuring comprehension through practice exercises and guided discussions. I also integrate cultural elements into the lesson to provide context and deepen cultural understanding. Each lesson concludes with a recap of key points and a preview of the next lesson to maintain continuity and keep students motivated.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my personalized approach to teaching and my commitment to student success. I take the time to understand each student's learning goals, interests, and challenges, and tailor my instruction accordingly to address their individual needs. I create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel empowered to take risks and make mistakes as part of the learning process. Additionally, my passion for language and culture shines through in my teaching, as I strive to inspire a love for learning and an appreciation for the richness of the Spanish-speaking world.

My lessons are best suited for novice-level Spanish students who are just beginning their language-learning journey. Whether you have no prior experience with Spanish or have limited exposure to the language, my lessons are tailored to meet you at your current level and help you build a solid foundation in Spanish. From learning basic vocabulary and pronunciation to practicing simple conversations and understanding everyday expressions, my goal is to provide you with the skills and confidence you need to communicate effectively in Spanish from the very beginning.
