About Andriy

I am aiming at providing my students with analytical skills useful in multiscale modeling, because I want my students to be involved in novel research. Multiscale modeling of soft materials and interfaces has been quickly gaining a pivotal role in state-of-the-art developments and achievements in nanoscience and nanotechnology. It offers us unique opportunities and pathways for cost-efficient prediction of properties and rational design of new advanced nanomaterials and nanodevices. This constitutes an integrated set of new knowledge that has been of high demand in industrial applications. These new ideas and achievements shall now be conveyed to the large pool of students in their education process.

I am able to present to the students basic concepts, used in simulation of different materials (metals, polymers, biomolecules on different space and tme scales (statistical mechanical, molecular solvation theory; molecular and atomistic simulations; quantum mechanics), and to design the syllabus in a way to guide the students through basic concepts and to train them how to apply computer programs for solving problems of soft matter, materials, and biomolecules characteristics, their processing, and use.

In terms of graduate courses, I am well prepared to teach theory / multiscale modeling courses in liquid state theory as applied to both electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions, solid-liquid interfaces, liquid-liquid interfaces, supercapacitor devices, fuel cells, soft matter systems with oligomeric polyelectrolytes, self-assembling organic rosette nanotubes, and biomolecules with ligands.

One of my strongest skills is my in-depth knowledge, passion, and extensive experience in multiscale modeling. Looking back, I remember one of my University Professors in Japan, Dr. Fumio Hirata, who inspired me and changed my way of thinking about multiscale modeling. After many years of successful research, I would like to pursue a teaching career to pass my passion and knowledge to the future generation of young researchers.

If I described my teaching statement theme, it would be Multiscale Modeling. I will provide foundational facts and information, keep my classes content current, display mastery of multiscale modeling, incorporate my and other ongoing research in instructions, and inspire my students by an example.

I am also interested in mentoring theoretical modeling students and serving as an advisor in these areas to students in other disciplines. My goal in all courses I am planning to teach is that each student develops a picture of the complex world of multiscale modeling: multiscale analysis, multiscale models and multiscale algorithms. I have profound experience with and knowledge of the current methods in molecular theory of solvation and quantum chemistry, which can be used to help such students develop theses and dissertations.

While working as a researcher in five countries, I learnt cross-cultural communication skills and enhanced cultural understanding between different countries. This experience will be useful in a classroom to analyze students’ knowledge in the fields of history and English grammar and to develop lesson plans to close knowledge gaps and help students achieve higher performance.

My Teaching Methodology:
Based on my teaching experience so far, I would describe my methodology for efficient teaching as follows:
• Teach by example, as I believe that examples bring a practical context in the subject and help to bring students’ attention to uncertain questions.
• Regularly test students’ understanding and progress by assignments and quizzes.
• Recognize the fact that some students are weaker and less motivated and require extra attention.
• Make the class more interactive. Interaction with students will engage them in the active learning process.
• Undergraduate and Graduate students need a different teaching approach. While undergraduate students need to be monitored for their understanding of the fundamental concepts, graduate students should be engaged in presenting research papers, writing research surveys, and doing research projects.

My Teaching Areas:
• Fundamentals of physics
• Fundamentals of chemical physics
• Fundamentals of physical chemistry
• Theory of liquids and mixtures
• Molecular solvation theory
• Theory of biomolecules in solution
• Molecular dynamics simulations
• Dissipative particles dynamics
• Quantum mechanics
• Computational chemistry
