About Harper
I have spent five focused years helping more than 175 students overcome maths anxiety and achieve academic success. My background includes a degree in mathematics and specialised training in educational psychology with emphasis on anxiety reduction and motivation in mathematics education. I began tutoring after witnessing how many capable students were prevented from pursuing their dreams by fear of mathematics. I have worked with students from primary school through to adult learners returning to education after long breaks. My students include those with diagnosed maths anxiety learning differences and those who simply never had effective mathematics instruction. I am known for my warmth my patience and my ability to help students reframe their relationship with mathematics. I design gentle progressive curricula that build skills and confidence simultaneously. Outside of teaching I practise mindfulness volunteer with mental health organisations and write about the psychology of mathematics learning. I believe that mathematics should be accessible to everyone and that emotional barriers to learning can be overcome with the right support and approach.

My mathematics teaching is specifically designed to help students overcome anxiety and develop a positive relationship with numbers and problem solving. I begin by creating a safe supportive environment where mistakes are treated as essential learning opportunities rather than failures. I teach students to recognise and challenge negative self-talk about mathematics replacing it with growth-oriented thinking. My lessons are carefully paced to ensure success at each step before moving to more challenging material. For arithmetic and algebra I use concrete materials visual representations and real-world contexts to make abstract concepts tangible. I teach problem-solving through structured heuristic approaches that reduce the overwhelm of complex questions. For students preparing for examinations I provide extensive practice with past papers while teaching stress management and time allocation strategies. I also work with students on study skills organisation and self-assessment so they can continue improving independently. My sessions are highly encouraging and focus on building both mathematical skills and mathematical confidence. I celebrate progress at every level and help students see mathematics as a skill they can develop rather than a fixed ability they either have or lack.
