About Joao
I am passionate about music and passionate about teaching.
I believe that making music really has become accessible to all, but to really master the learning curve, an understanding of the fundamentals is required.
Recording music is also something that is very broad in the subject: not only do you need to know what the gear does and how it works, but you also need to have great project management skills, people skills, and understanding the world and market around you.
I've worked in live sound situations, I've been on both sides of the glass in the studio, and even repaired and modified legendary pieces of equipment. I've designed and commissioned million-dollar studio facilities, and taught/mentored hundreds of under-grads.
But it's also about empathy and self-care. Remember when I said - a good engineer/producer has good people skills. You need to know how to take good care of yourself to succeed.

I was lucky enough to work in studios at the tail end of the golden age of recording - computers weren't powerful enough and we had to rely on tape machines, mixing consoles, and a lot of engineering work to make a recording happen.
This is no longer the case in 2021 - you can make a killer album on your laptop with minimal investment. But most self-producing artists and even upcoming engineers lack a combination of basic knowledge that really lets them unlock the full potential of their studio setup.
I provide 50min long sessions where I do the following:
- Critique and comment on ongoing work. Both artistically and from an engineering standpoint.
- Create a detailed curriculum per student. Maybe you want to know about microphone techniques and are trying to record a full band, or maybe all you do is mix? Or perhaps you are trying to invest in your first setup and want to get the best out of your setup and learn how to use it?
- I am very flexible. I'm also a session musician so I find myself often helping my mentees in the musical sense - music theory, musicianship, developing your own sound.
- I am very passionate about practising. I practice instruments myself and I love the science behind the art of practising. I've helped mentees establish practice routines and achieve their goals.
- Mentoring in general aspects like business sense, growing your client base, navigating the industry, mental-health, etc.
I tend to work with adults and young adults. I was a guest lecturer at SAE London and designed a few of the course modules myself. I have a BA in Recording Arts (SAE London/Middlesex University) and MSc in Computer Science (University of London/Queen Mary).
