About Tom

I have five A-Levels (A*,A*, A,A,A) across both the sciences and in more creative subjects. The variety of my academic and professional background allows me to tutor across the sciences, as well as in the UCAT, personal statements, medical school interviews and academic writing. My journey thus far (currently an F1 Doctor) has certainly bypassed convention! This year, I graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cambridge. Before this, I studied at the University of Leeds and have gradually changed direction from the business / corporate worlds in London to retrain as a medical doctor. Alongside my medical degree, I also completed a mini-MBA (Master of Business Administration) at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Additionally, I am a Stephen Fry Scholar and recipient of the Desmond Hawkins and Arie Hector Awards. I am also a keen rower. I have over 3 years successful tutoring experience, both online and in-person and I really enjoy it! Several students, both from the UK and internationally, have received offers to medical schools with my help. I strive to encourage and inspire confidence in my tutees, as well as to make all my lessons as fun, high yield and as engaging as possible!

- NHS Hot Topics. Stay ahead with a clear understanding of the NHS structure, principles, and current challenges such as waiting times, staffing shortages, and health inequalities.

Find out more about Tom

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I know how tricky the UCAT exam, personal statements and interviews can be and believe that for exceptional future doctors they shouldn't be obstacles to getting a place at Medical School. I am passionate about passing on my knowledge to others, and now have more than 3 years' experience doing just that!
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

The topics tested in the UCAT exam and interviews are straightforward when you break them down. What makes the UCAT exam hard is the extreme time pressure. By me teaching what the examiner / question is looking for, and through providing a solid understanding of 'the basics', you can excel in your applications.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

"Work expands to fill the time available". This is an anecdote one of my teachers once told me. I now know it as 'Parkinson's Law', which reminds us that we must be nimble and effective with our time management, which is especially true when it comes to UCAT preparation.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

My students have told me they really like me breaking each question down to its individual components and going back to basics. Sometimes, refreshing content learnt many years ago at school is the highest yield teaching. Personalisation, going at the right pace, and knowing how and when to 'push' students to realise their potential, are super important traits in a tutor. Being humble to admit if I don't know something is also crucial!
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was at school, I remember my peers using complicated books for the UCAT. I found these to be low-yield - online UCAT platforms are much better. Also, they would spend hours and hours practicing each day, but they still weren't getting better scores. This was an ineffective us of their time. When it comes to UCAT practice, little and often is key!
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Excellent mental arithmetic and having fast reading skills (plus practice and guidance in the form of a tutor) are key to doing well in this exam. When I prepared for the exam, I had to review calculations that I hadn't covered since GCSE or even before, such as percentage change and speed, distance, time calculations. Doing little bits each day to bring mental maths to the fore was super helpful for me, such as adding up the cost of shopping in my head each day!
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I absolutely love teaching the UCAT; seeing others master this (initially scary) exam gives me a huge sense of satisfaction. I also love traveling and have been to 60 + countries. In terms of medicine, I am fascinated by how nutrition and money affect health, and I am also a bit of a thrill-seeker. I am in South Africa on my Emergency and Trauma elective as we speak!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Compared to other tutors, I have a diverse professional background ranging from medicine to creative subjects, as well as economics and business. I believe this equips me to teach all UCAT sections so effectively. This is because the best UCAT candidates have the most diverse skill set, comprising Maths, English, Spatial Reasoning and many more. My students tell me my lessons are fun, efficient, and most importantly, high yield!
