I am a mechanical engineer-in-training, recently graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering, degree with distinction. When it comes to engineering courses, I have found the best success by focusing on understanding the core concepts for each class and reinforcing them through guided practice questions. For any undergraduate mechanical engineering course, I would typically start a lesson by reviewing any concepts the student may find confusing through visualization of the concept if possible or using analogies to make the concept easier to understand. This will be followed by practice questions to reinforce the concepts.
