About Matthew
I inspire young people to become more rounded, happier individuals, confident in their own abilities by helping them realise their potential. I have previously triggered life-changing decisions in young people by inspiring a passion for the natural world and will consistently look to provoke ambition in those I work with.
After finding my passion for the environment through years of travelling and SCUBA diving, culminating in running a marine conservation project in Belize, I have now returned to study Environmental Science at the University of Exeter. In being open and honest with students about my own struggles in conventional education, I hope to inspire a positive attitude that they can one day find the career that is right for them by working hard and chasing their dream.

My teaching style, developed in my time as a SCUBA instructor and later presenting environmental and conservation lectures to gap year students, is relaxed and uses the student’s passions as lenses to explore and understand subject areas. I like to get to know my students and tailor every lesson to the individual, ensuring I address the "why do I need to know this?" question in a relatable context.
Understanding angles is important for aspiring footballers and tennis players.
A knowledge of sound and light waves is fundamental to performing well on stage.
In a global world, knowing the physical and human geographical differences between countries and continents is vital to business success.
All knowledge is valuable.
Maths lessons will generally be taught with lots of past papers and practice questions. Never has the saying 'practice makes perfect' been more true than in mathematics. Often, it is the consistent failures that dishearten students and prevent them from persevering. However, through a subtle approach that begins by simply talking about how to read a question and the methodical steps a student can take to break the question down, a habit of success will be formed. With this success will come satisfaction and a desire to do more which, with my gentle steering, will gradually become more challenging and require greater independence. I find maths to be the most rewarding subject to teach.
Science lessons, whether specific to one subject or general, are where I like to introduce anecdotes, activities, games and experiments. Science should be fun, it is the art of asking 'Why?' or 'How?' and then figuring the answer out for yourself, rather than the conventional method of teaching science which simply tells young people the answers, without first provoking them to ask the questions. By sparking an interest and creating wonder in the eyes of our young people, they can feel empowered to ask more questions and get more answers, the cycle is continuous and as a warning: Once your child starts to love science, they may never be quiet about it again!
Lessons range from 30-60 minutes depending on age, catering for all levels up to GCSE. Please do not hesitate to send me a message with any questions or concerns you may have, I will always get back to you as soon as possible.

I can’t praise Matthew highly enough. Such a patient and thought provoking teacher. He has helped my daughter enormously and she is well on track to achieve a high grade in GCSE. She loves his teaching style; he makes the subject relevant and interesting and provides a clarity that makes it all make sense to her! Praise indeed from my daughter!
