About Octavian

I am a full-time private Mathematics tutor with an Oxford research background and over 10,000 hours of teaching experience across every level from GCSE to postgraduate.
My academic background is in Physics and Mathematics — an MSc from Paris, a BEng from Toulouse, and an MSc from Oxford, where I also taught and researched for over a decade. Mathematics at the level I teach it is not a separate subject from Physics: it is the same discipline. Mechanics, differential equations, linear algebra, probability, complex numbers, calculus — I have used all of it in active research, which means I teach it from the inside rather than from a textbook.
My students' outcomes speak for themselves. Twin sisters I prepared in A-level Further Maths and the MAT both received offers to read at Oxford. A student I coached through IB Mathematics HL achieved a 7. A Glasgow undergraduate I worked with had failed multiple exams — after our sessions he passed all ten and graduated. A student preparing for quantitative finance interviews at top London and New York hedge funds described my preparation as masterful in handling stochastic calculus, time-series modelling, and linear algebra under pressure.
I cover the full Mathematics curriculum: GCSE, A-level (Edexcel, OCR, AQA), Further Maths, IB Maths HL/SL, MAT, STEP, university undergraduate and postgraduate level including Real Analysis, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, and Quantitative Methods for Finance.
I work with a small number of students at a time and take on only those who are serious about the subject. If that is you, get in touch.

Every student starts with a diagnostic session. Before covering any new material, I identify precisely where the gaps are — not just in knowledge, but in mathematical reasoning, proof technique, and exam strategy. The plan is built entirely around that diagnosis. There is no generic syllabus.
Mathematics at A-level and above is not a computation subject. It requires building a coherent understanding of structure — why theorems are true, why methods work, what happens when conditions are not met. Students who only know how to execute procedures will always hit a ceiling. Students who understand the underlying mathematics can solve problems they have never seen before. That is what I teach, and it is the difference between a B and an A*, between a 6 and a 7, between passing and failing a university exam.
For MAT and STEP specifically, I focus on the problem-solving fluency these papers demand — the ability to think clearly under pressure about unfamiliar problems. This cannot be drilled through past papers alone. It requires developing genuine mathematical intuition, which takes time and the right kind of practice.
Within 24 hours of every session I send the student fully typed notes of what we covered, theoretical reminders on the concepts that need further attention, and a written summary of where they stand and what to focus on before next time. Parents are copied in as standard. This is part of every lesson I teach, without exception.
I teach online and in person across London. I have a strict no-cancellation policy for cancellations under 24 hours — a missed slot cannot be offered to another student. Exceptions are made only for serious illness with a doctor's note.
