About Elizabeth
Hi there! I am a Mathematics graduate from Edinburgh University (2.1) who has continued my love of mathematics in my career, having done a Mathematics-based Masters at the University of Glasgow (Distinction), 2 years in Finance at Deloitte, and now approaching the start of a Mathematics-based PhD at the University of Edinburgh in September. Having had times where topics or complicated questions seem overwhelming myself, I truly believe that with an encouraging environment and a good tutor who can break questions down step by step, students can feel confident in their abilities to approach all maths questions independently (and maybe even enjoy doing so)! I am also very skilled at knowing the tricks that come along with certain styles of exam questions and the logical ways of thinking required when answering them. I am conscious that having extra-curricular time spent on Maths outside of long school days can sometimes be draining. Therefore I aim to be a friendly face, and am happy to take breaks/have the odd chit-chat whilst maintaining a good pace in sessions, to ensure an efficient but enjoyable experience learning!

I generally approach tutoring by starting with exam paper questions and working backwards/in-depth with the pupil in discussing how we solve them. I do this to ensure my pupils have sufficient knowledge on: (a) the breadth of topics covered, style of exams questions, and so that I can quickly spot any focus areas where more time and depth is needed; (b) the background understanding needed to fully solve each question, so that the pupil can answer variations/more complex versions of such questions independently and with confidence in future. I generally run 1-1.5 hour sessions to ensure we have sufficient time to cover enough questions in depth, but can do more frequent 30 min sessions instead if needed (online only). I am strongly passionate in making sure I create a friendly and encouraging environment during my tutoring sessions to ensure pupils have confidence in their abilities, feel safe in asking questions, and can maintain energy throughout sessions to make them as impactful as possible!
