About Gavin

My love for math has only been sparked recently by a couple college professors at Santa Fe, in Gainesville FL, who revealed the literal artistic beauty behind numbers and mathematics, and how nearly everything we learn in school is simply the ‘conventional’ steps one would take when solving a numbers problem. If we stop learning math in the same chronological way and start to see the generality (the Big Picture), we will learn how and why numbers interact intuitively. There are many perspectives that can exponentially increase one’s understanding, from seeing equations as a ‘balanced-scale’ and seeing numbers themselves as magnitudes rather than digits, to seeing each part of an equation as a ‘vector’ component, with some information attached to it. The earliest concepts; which tend to be the most fun, remain integral to all mathematics and must be focused on throughout the entirety of a mathematical journey. Many of these mathematical tactics focuses on patterns and optimization allowing you to do math without actually crunching numbers bringing you much closer to a super fun surface-level understanding of mathematics. Schools often focus on “pure math” rather than applied. I believe these two must be integrated to gain any real understanding or joy for mathematics.

The more you can ‘think with’ math, the more useful the mathematical tools we learn about in school will be. Once you can generalize problem solving and how numbers interact, all the confusion and thick fog created by various formulae and other minor rules goes away. We will not work through problems conventionally. Many tutors simply answer questions step-by-step. My goal is to teach one to create those steps on their own as if they are inventing a solution themselves. The goal is to understand mathematics inside out, in fun ways that make it feel as though you are an ancient philosopher inventing mathematics for the first time! We will often spend lots of time on simple problems to develop an intuitive understanding of math rather than a (rote) memorized one. We will play with many visual proofs too. Additionally, we will maintain the idea that every single mathematic operation are simply ways to shortcut unbearably long strings of addition. This means multiplication, division, subtraction, Riemann sums, integrals, derivatives, and so on, can be seen as easy ways to write HUGE chunks of addition. This will make Mathematics much more interesting, as one is no longer seeing ‘digits,’ when looking at an equation, they are seeing operations, patterns, and extensive iterations. This type of understanding will also help immensely in the future, where being able to see what numbers are doing without actually doing the math becomes the most powerful and fun skill ever. The goal is to have power over numbers just like we have over legos! It can be very simple and fun if you let it be! Mathematics is just as straightforward as legos at its heart!
The goal here is to reawaken ones mathematical drive and usher in an era of creativity and discovery that most children never never encounter in school. Mathematics is simpler than holding a conversation and one will see that quickly learning with me. I look forward to creating a tailored curriculum for each child depending on his/her dreams and situation! Worksheets from school must be brought into me if our goal is to get your child past a test.
