About Alec
I have a Masters and PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of Leeds, as well as a Bachelor of Arts & Science from McMaster University. During my studies, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a wide variety of university-level courses including Calculus, Linear Algebra, Logic, and Introduction to Mathematics.
My favourite part of teaching, though, was always office hours. It gave me a chance to work one-on-one with students and see their thinking in action. Seeing that thinking process allowed me to spot the exact point where a student's thinking went astray. By fixing that thought process, it not only allowed students to solve the problem at hand, but broadened their mathematical toolbox, allowing them to solve a wider variety of problems.
I am happy to tutor advanced high-school courses including pre-calculus and AP Calculus. I can also teach most first-year university courses, such as Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Introduction to Mathematics. I may be able to teach higher-level courses, depending on the subject. Some of my favourite advanced subjects include Mathematical Logic, Model Theory, Topology, and Real Analysis.

My lessons emphasize understanding and mathematical thinking over rote memorization. The more a student understands, the less they need to remember—and less risk they have of misremembering or forgetting something critical during a test.
Of course, fostering this understanding must be balanced against coursework deadlines and exam preparation. The bulk of the lesson will be devoted to that week's assignment. The first priority, of course, will be any questions the student may be struggling with. Otherwise, I will pick assignment questions that present interesting challenges ripe with learning opportunities.
On weeks where the student has a firm grasp of the material, we may take the opportunity to deepen the student's understanding of the subject at hand, discuss broader applications of the material, or work on practical skills such as typesetting mathematics using LaTeX.

I've been friends with Alec since high school and even then he was a capable and clear tutor. His enthusiasm for number and education in general is catching. He is able to break down complicated concepts to explain them in a way that even those with no previous interest or understanding can start to grasp them. He's a patient teacher, who's always willing to change tacts if a certain way of looking at a problem isn't helping. Even now, more than a decade and change later, I still find myself sending him my thesis statements for sanity checking. If you are looking for someone who can help you untangle mathematics in a way that takes the stress and intimidation out of the equation, you've found the right person.
Alec was my TA for an undergrad course. He cares about his student's learning and wants them to understand the material, not just pass the test.
Alec was my teacher for two years while I was in University and I can confidently and unreservedly recommend him to other students. Alec combines a personal passion for learning with an uncanny gift for explaining difficult concepts to others. Alec is extremely patient, and he genuinely cares about the success of his students. He takes his teaching work seriously and was consistently reliable, responsible, and provided thorough feedback. Lastly, Alec has a great sense of humour and an enthusiastic and friendly presence which makes for a comfortable learning environment. I strongly recommend Alec as a teacher and I'm sure you'll have a great experience working with him!
