I tailor my approach differently for each student I work with, as best serves them as individuals. Some methods that I have found positive results with are showing the student how to do one problem, and then having them work through similar problems themselves, gradually making the problems less and less similar to the original one, and identifying where in the process the student finds difficultly and working through that mental block specifically.
