About James

James Freyne is an experienced construction educator with a strong background in design, engineering, and real estate. He holds a degree in Materials Engineering from the University of Limerick and a master’s in Real Estate Valuation from Heriot-Watt University, accredited by the RICS. Having lived and worked in Dubai for over 15 years, James brings a global perspective to teaching, linking practical construction skills with design thinking and real-world problem-solving. His lessons emphasize purposeful, functional, and creative design, helping students understand how ideas become built environments. James creates a hands-on, engaging learning experience where students gain confidence through project-based work, craftsmanship, and critical thinking. His goal is to help learners develop practical construction skills, technical understanding, and design awareness that support both academic achievement and future career pathways.

About the lesson

This Program is designed for students who want to develop practical skills in construction, woodworking, and design while preparing for the Irish Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate. Lessons are project based and interactive, combining structured guidance with hands-on work in the workshop and constructive feedback.

Each course is customized to the student’s grade level and needs. Students are assessed to identify their current skills, coursework, and upcoming assessments, and a tailored program is designed to align with the Irish curriculum and provide appropriate challenges. Projects may include furniture, small structures, model homes, or interior fittings, all created within realistic constraints such as available materials, tools, space, and budget, while following safe work practices and industry standards.

Lessons develop critical thinking, problem solving, practical construction skills, and iterative design thinking.
