About Olivia
I have performed professionally in a mariachi band for years, and that ensemble, celebratory tradition shapes almost everything about how I teach guitar today. Nine years into teaching now, I've worked with about one hundred seventy-five students, many of them genuinely drawn to traditional Mexican music and culture specifically. My performance background gives me genuine, lived insight into mariachi's rhythmic energy and cultural richness, insight that purely academic guitar teachers simply cannot offer their students. I work particularly well with students genuinely interested in traditional Mexican music, not just generic guitar technique disconnected from any cultural tradition. My teaching style is energetic and tradition-focused, reflecting genuine performance experience, though I remain patient with students building foundational technique before tackling advanced repertoire. I have guided numerous students toward real competency in traditional mariachi style, watching many develop genuine passion for the tradition alongside real technical skill. Students consistently tell me they appreciate learning something authentic and culturally rich, rather than a generic, watered-down version of guitar technique. I take genuine pride in helping students connect with mariachi's genuine celebratory spirit, not just its technical demands alone. My years performing in a mariachi band shape a teaching approach built around ensemble playing, traditional repertoire, and the genuine celebratory spirit that defines this music tradition. Lessons focus heavily on rhythm guitar technique, strumming patterns, and chord changes essential to traditional mariachi style, since that foundation supports everything else in this tradition. I teach real traditional songs from early on, not simplified exercises alone, since authentic repertoire carries the cultural weight and genuine joy that makes this music worth learning in the first place. Ensemble awareness receives constant attention, teaching students to listen and lock in rhythmically with other instruments, since mariachi exists fundamentally as group, celebratory music. Technique is built carefully around traditional style, right-hand strumming especially, since mariachi guitar demands a specific rhythmic energy quite different from other guitar traditions. I explain the cultural and historical context behind mariachi constantly, since understanding this tradition's roots genuinely deepens a student's connection to what they're actually playing. Listening to real mariachi recordings forms a core part of every lesson, training the ear to recognize authentic style and energy beyond written notation alone. I encourage genuine enthusiasm and energy in playing, since mariachi values celebratory spirit as much as technical precision throughout every performance.
