About Sapientias

I have an undergrad degree in economics and maths and an economics degree in quantitative economics as well as CFA and FRM designations. I started teaching at the university level as a graduate student and loved it. Since then I have been tutoring microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics to students at top schools. Most of my students work online via our specialised platform. Intermediate level economics courses are the most mathematically rigorous courses at top universities. I specialise in these courses and have six years of experience in preparing students for coursework and examination in these courses.

I have been tutoring for 6 years and I only work with students at top universities like LSE, King's, UCL, Oxford, Warwick. I work with students who are looking for rigorous tutoring to cover the entire coursework in a few weeks and target a high score on exams. I have a personal database of questions and past exams that I use to test my students and prepare them for conceptual variations of the material covered in class. **I do not help with taking exams or being involved with any kind of cheating on the exam.**

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first started tutoring as an undergrad tutor at my college. Soon after I was receiving requests from students who requested private lessons, sometimes for help with homework and for general tutoring for exam preparation.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics to undergrads. There aren't standardized topics. Each student has their own weakness and needs help differently. I make individual lesson plans based on specific goals.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely, my undergrad teachers, and some graduate TAs were incredible. As a student, I found graduate tutors were able to explain complex concepts at my level, while professors talked like professors. I later found that very useful. The ability of a tutor to connect with a student at their level is really valuable.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The ability to connect with a student, to be almost like a senior-friend who is not going to judge, has patience and the temperament to go over a concept multiple times, and to break down complex ideas in simple language. Of course, a tutor should have a strong command on the subject matter and should prepare each lesson tailored for the student.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Higher level economics requires a lot of math, mostly calculus and algebra. Econometrics requires a strong foundation of probability and statistics. Nearly half the students who reach out for intermediate economics or econometrics actually struggle due to weak foundation in math or statistics. It becomes a challenge because as a tutor I have to fix their foundation before they can make progress in the course, and it can be a time consuming and patient job.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am very passionate about macroeconomics, but I enjoy teaching econometrics and macroeconomics equally. Tutoring for different schools/universities gives a tutor a very well-rounded understanding of how a subject is covered across universities, and a tutor is sometimes able to connect the dots for a student better than a classroom learning experience. I enjoy being able to pass that understanding to my students.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I take out time to prepare each lesson for my students. Sometimes preparing mock exams for them, especially if they need practice and have exam anxiety. I treat my students' target as my target, whether it is to pass a class or score a first.
