About Kitty
I’m a Banking and Finance student at the University of Birmingham with around five years of tutoring experience and a genuine love of English literature and reading. I achieved 10 Grade 9s at GCSE and A*AAA at A-level, and I understand how important strong writing, comprehension and analytical skills are across every stage of education.
I have experience working with students of different ages and abilities, from younger pupils preparing for 7+ and 11+ entrance exams through to GCSE and A-level students. I enjoy helping students become more confident readers and writers, whether that means improving creative writing, comprehension, essay technique or close literary analysis.
I am patient, organised and encouraging, and I adapt my approach to each student rather than using a one-size-fits-all method. My aim is not only to improve exam performance, but also to help students enjoy reading and feel more confident expressing their ideas clearly and thoughtfully.

My English lessons are tailored to the student’s age, level and goals. I can support 7+, 11+ and other school entrance exams, as well as GCSE and A-Level English Language and Literature.
For younger students, I focus on comprehension, creative writing, vocabulary, grammar and building confidence with timed entrance-exam questions. For GCSE and A-Level students, I place more emphasis on close textual analysis, essay structure, argument development, exam technique and using evidence effectively.
Lessons are usually one hour, although I can adapt this depending on age and concentration. I have around five years of tutoring experience and I am particularly passionate about literature, so I enjoy helping students engage with texts rather than simply memorising interpretations.
My aim is to make students stronger, more confident readers and writers while also giving them the specific techniques they need to perform well in exams.

To whom it may concern,
I am very pleased to provide a reference for Kitty Farrell, who has tutored me in both Mathematics and English.
During the time I have been tutored by Kitty, I have found her to be patient, knowledgeable and very approachable. She has always taken the time to make sure I understand what we are working on, and I have found her explanations clear and easy to follow.
In Mathematics, Kitty has been particularly helpful when I have struggled with more difficult topics. She breaks problems down into manageable steps and explains the reasoning behind them, which has helped me to understand what I am doing rather than simply memorising a method. I have become much more confident approaching questions independently as a result.
In English, I have found Kitty’s feedback particularly useful in helping me understand how I can improve my work. She explains what I could develop and why, while also helping me recognise what I am already doing well. This has made it much easier for me to take her feedback and apply it to my own work.
What I have appreciated most about being tutored by Kitty is how comfortable I have felt asking questions or admitting when I do not understand something. I have never felt rushed or embarrassed about needing something explained again, and she has always been willing to approach it differently if the first explanation has not clicked with me.
From my experience as her student, Kitty has been a reliable, supportive and encouraging tutor who has helped me improve both my understanding and my confidence. I have really valued being taught by her and would be very happy to recommend her as a tutor.
