My Chemistry teaching at A-Level is specifically structured around the actual assessment requirements of the examination boards that my students are sitting, using the specific language, structure, and focus that mark schemes reward rather than providing generic Chemistry instruction that may not translate into examination performance. I map every Chemistry topic to its specific assessment weighting, typical question formats, and most commonly tested aspects before teaching it, because time is a scarce resource in examination preparation and students who invest it in the highest-yield content improve their marks most efficiently. My approach to organic mechanism questions teaches the specific drawing conventions that examiners require — curly arrows starting from electron-rich sites, arrows ending at bond-forming or bond-breaking positions, intermediate structures drawn correctly — because these conventions determine whether mechanism answers score full marks even when the underlying chemistry is understood. Calculation questions are practised with attention to the specific intermediate steps that mark schemes award partial credit for, because students who show clear working lose fewer marks to arithmetic errors than those who provide only final answers. I teach students to maximise marks on 'suggest' questions — questions asking for reasoned predictions about unfamiliar chemical situations — because these require the application of chemical principles rather than recalled knowledge and are the questions where genuinely able students most reliably demonstrate their understanding. Extended prose answers are practised repeatedly against specific mark scheme criteria because the ability to write complete, precisely worded Chemistry explanations is a distinct skill from understanding the Chemistry itself. My teaching goal is specifically to improve each student's A-Level Chemistry grade.
