About Sam
My students say they feel comfortable in my teaching environment and that they can learn a lot in a short time.
I believe 90% of learning happens outside of the learning environment, so text or call me anytime with questions and I can help you take the next step right then and there.
I believe teaching is highly relational so the first tutoring lesson is free to make sure it’s a match. :)
I believe the best teachers are also the best students because the follow curiosity. Therefore the best teachers develop curiosity in their students, and closely curate homework and lesson material to what the student is enthralled by - so much so that studying itself becomes intrinsically motivating.
I lived in Japan for a year and a half, and will be spending at least four months there every year for the next couple years. I have worked as an interpreter, intercultural exchange event coordinator, and teacher. I am very familiar with the Genki I and II textbooks.
Let's connect with the Japanese language, make sense of the culture, and express ourselves to connect with others!

The lesson is a series of connections, discoveries, and revelations that build on the student’s previous understanding, which through repetition, create a second language.
What are your dreams for connecting with Japanese people through the Japanese language? I have achieved my dream, I’d love to develop your curiosity and give you the tools to achieve yours.
I will find your topics of interest within Japanese and push you further into them through teaching, motivation, and inspiring or interesting anecdotes of Japanese culture.
Lessons begin with a review assessment to gauge how well students have been applying the past material, which naturally transitions into many teaching moments. My review questions can be extremely specific or abstract - but they will hold you accountable your part of the learning process.
The time spent outside of the lesson is crucial - I will be answering any questions you have through the week, reinforcing your understanding and noting down what topics would be of interest to you for our next lesson.
