If you're looking for a general idea of how to start writing your story, as this beginner student of mine was asking, here's something I suggest to all my students and clients. Consider it a gift! (Note: I'm using the Romance Genre for this example.)
1. I’d recommend starting with your audience. What stories do they think are the best in the romance genre? If you find those out, you now have a wealth of stories to draw from and create your own personal exciting twist on!
2. Next, find out what you want to say about romance. Is it, love is suffering? Love is a double-edged sword? Love is…? Knowing this will help you create the spine of your story so you don’t lose your way and have to rewrite excessively and spend years on one story! This is what most would call “Theme.” Really important.
3. Next, tropes. Take those stories your audience likes and see what tropes they used. I recommend visiting TvTropes.com for a comprehensive list. Once you collect the most used ones in those stories, create ways to subvert them for your story. Keep those in your back pocket, because those are tools you’ll use to wow your audiences.
4. After that, decide your ending. Not in detail but in tone. Do you want it to be tragic? Do you want it to be happy? Or, somewhere in between. Knowing the type of ending you’re aiming for will help you design your Plot Points and characters around it.
5. From there, work on your characters. Start with your Hero. Or, since you’re writing a romance story, it’s probably a Heroine (most romance readers are women). Flesh her character out, because all the other characters in your story will come from her. Then, move down the list: Love Interest, Antagonist, etc…
6. Finally, start outlining. If you’ve done the above properly, this step will be a lot easier. Just pick the structure you think will best suit this particular story and go from there. There are a million and one structures out there. This is important: DON’T FOLLOW THEM TO THE LETTER. Base your own structure on them and adjust the structure to your story.
These are broad strokes and applying them will look differently for every person and every story.
I'm not here to teach you THE way to write a great story.
I'm here to teach you A WAY of writing a great story that has worked for myself and dozens of students over the years I've been teaching.
MY GOAL: To teach you all I know about storytelling, get you as close to the finish line as I can, then have you trust yourself to get yourself past said finish line!
If you're still reading, Gold Star for you, and...
I prefer to work with a certain type of student. Someone who:
1. Is open-minded and humble.
2. Will respect their boundaries as well as my own.
3. Is partial to making numbered lists.
4. Wants to have fun while we build them into the badass writer they're meant to be!
