I have been in IT industry in India/US/UK as a software professional from 1984 until now. I also have headed as Technical Director/Engineering Director, many Multinational companies offshore development centers with over 300 product engineers. I believe that students must learn the basic theory but focus should be learn the nuance by application of the knowledge to practical problems. In these days of Internet, it is not required to remember programming language syntax since everything is available online at a single click. What is required is to develop the ability to work on the logical techniques to do a good job at programming. Also it is important to understand the limitations and advantages of each programming language one learns. Not all languages are suitable for all programming tasks.
