About Robert
I was a senior book publisher for 30 years beginning as an editor at Hutchinson, the Editorial Director at Macmillan London then Sphere paperbacks. I was an agent for 3 years and then became MD of Virgin's publishing division for 10 years. I then moved into digital content before retiring. I have published and represented authors of academic books and general non-fiction and fiction. There are do's and don't in constructing and presenting your proposal to a publisher. There are also important cost issues to do with the size and specifications of your book that a publisher has to assess . No matter how good the writing, these are critical factors in a publisher's decision whether to take a book seriously never mind offer a publishing contract.

I tell them what a good agent would tell them, if they could find one who would take them on (very difficult). In one-to-one I talk to each author about his specific type of book and teach him or her how to have the best chance of getting a publisher. Usually 2-3 sessions are enough. In a larger group situation I talk to them as if I was their agent guiding them through the do's and don'ts of presenting a book and the tricks of the trade which every agent knows and uses.
