In our first 10-15 minutes, if we hadn't had a pre-lesson phone call, I will clarify what university and subjects you are doing, and what you're planning to focus on. I will conduct a little assessment to see what level you are at in this subject. We will then discuss what you would like out of the lesson and the method of teaching - it may be problem-based questioning, I can answer the question myself and narrate my thinking process in front of you - I can assist you answering it through a Socratic method, for example.

Find out more about James

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I think it started when I was 21. I was struggling to find a field of study to dedicate myself, and didn't feel a lot of fields were my "match", I took an opportunity on the advice of some friends to study law and here I am.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach law - all areas but I am also a counsellor, and feel comfortable teaching social work, psychology and interrelated fields. Lots of long term students I've been able to build meaningful friendships in which I am able to discuss anything
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

It is important that teachers bring a certain type of honesty. You're there to build a person so sometimes brutal honesty is good as long as it doesn't completely destroy - you're there to build.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

As I've stated above, honesty is important and understanding as well. These qualities are most important.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school. .

To ask questions to people you trust. Asking is the most important thing
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Law is such a vast subject. The more I do it the more comfortable I feel. What I don't like though is the unpredictability of the law. Maybe I'll get a better handle on it with time.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I think my passion would be completely different. I want to be a musician or a doctor.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

Because I notice a difference in the people I help
