About Marlene
I am an experienced classroom teacher and private tutor with over 20 years in education, now working exclusively with students online and in person. I am known for being inspirational, approachable and highly effective, creating lessons that students genuinely enjoy and look forward to.
I have tutored over 100 students privately and take great pride in building long-term relationships that support real academic growth. One student I taught from Year 7 to Year 13, after being repeatedly told she would never succeed in English, went on to study English at Newcastle University through consistent encouragement, structured teaching and belief in her ability.
I hold QTS, a CertEd and TEFL qualification, alongside an enhanced DBS and up-to-date safeguarding and child protection training. I mark work carefully after each lesson and keep fully informed of curriculum and exam changes to ensure teaching remains current and accurate.
I am highly responsive to parents and students, communicate clearly and offer flexible rescheduling with reasonable notice. I value professionalism, reliability and open communication at all times.
My lessons suit students who want to learn, are curious and are willing to engage. I foster a positive, respectful environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions and grow in confidence. My lessons are structured, supportive and designed to help students genuinely enjoy learning while achieving outstanding results. I teach students aged 7 to 18, specialising in 11+, 13+, KS3 and GCSE English across all exam boards.
Each 60 minute lesson follows a clear structure with high expectations, delivered in a nurturing and fun way. I focus on discussion-based learning so students feel engaged, confident and willing to think aloud. I am highly empathetic and never reprimand or embarrass students. Humour is used to reduce pressure and build trust.
I assess ability through carefully chosen tasks and exam-style questions without presenting them as formal tests. We tackle them together in a relaxed way so I can accurately identify strengths and gaps. What is learned in each lesson is immediately applied to exam sample papers, building strong technique alongside subject knowledge.
Homework is set based on lesson content to reinforce learning and develop independence. Progress is carefully tracked, with written feedback provided after every lesson explaining what has been achieved and what to focus on next. Parents receive clear updates and detailed notes throughout.
I hold a CertEd, QTS and TEFL qualification and have over 20 years of experience. I am a former Head of English and have taught in state, private, grammar and international schools in the UK, Germany and Switzerland. I also teach French and German to GCSE level, as well as beginner Latin.
I have a 100 percent admissions success rate for grammar, private and state schools, with students regularly achieving grade improvements, top school placements and scholarships. I consistently go above and beyond to ensure each student reaches their full potential.
