I tend to build up the basics of any topic before starting a new concept, this helps the student to have an overview of what they'll be studying as well as this inculcates a seed of interest regarding the topic in their brilliant minds. I really think that it's necessary to have a bonding with the kid, which makes them comfortable to even ask the smallest doubt.
