About Juan

I'm Juan Cerro — music producer, songwriter, and educator, born in Colombia, raised in Switzerland, and now happily planted in Los Angeles. Berklee College of Music gave me the foundation, and a lifetime of bouncing between continents gave me the ear: a sound that mixes global pop instincts with real musical craft (and a slightly chaotic accent). As a producer and songwriter, I've gotten to work with artists like Sebastián Yatra and Jesse & Joy, and I've produced records for Gonza Silva, Mario Puglia, and Simon Grossmann. My work on Mario Puglia's full-length album earned a Juno Award nomination — still one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me, and proof that the stuff I teach actually works out in the wild. Teaching has been part of my life for years, with both kids and adults, and honestly it's my favorite part of the week. I teach saxophone, guitar, and music production, in English, Spanish, or German — whichever one you're most comfortable in. And because I'm still producing and releasing music constantly, everything I share comes straight from what I'm doing right now, not from a textbook someone wrote in 1987. My whole philosophy: music lessons should be serious about getting you good, and also genuinely, ridiculously fun. Those two things are absolutely not in conflict. Nobody ever improved at something they dreaded on Tuesdays. When I'm not producing or teaching, I'm writing my own music — still chasing new ways to get creativity and technique in the same room without them arguing. Let's make something!

WHAT YOU GET

My lessons are built on the same training I got at Berklee College of Music. My whole goal is to hand you that level of teaching in a way that's warm, approachable, affordable, and a genuinely good time. I'm also still producing and writing music every single day, so everything I share comes fresh from what I'm actually doing right now.

HOW I TEACH
First question I always ask: what do you WANT to play? Not what you think you're supposed to learn — what song is stuck in your head right now? That's where we start. Want to play the Pink Panther theme on sax? Amazing choice, let's go. Want to shred like your favorite guitarist? We'll break it down together, piece by piece.

Then, quietly, while you're busy having fun, you pick up the real foundations:

- TECHNIQUE — how to hold the thing and make a genuinely beautiful sound. Way more exciting than it sounds.
- EAR TRAINING — figuring out songs just by listening. Honestly feels like a superpower.
- HARMONY — the *why* behind music. Why some notes feel like sunshine and others sound like a villain walking into the room.
- CREATING YOUR OWN MUSIC — improvising, writing, producing. My favorite part, and probably soon yours. You end up a well-rounded musician, not someone who can only play the six songs they memorized.

A TYPICAL LESSON
Quick warm-up, then straight into the good stuff: your song, your solo, your track. We slow the tricky bits down until they click — and they always click. The last few minutes are a game or a little creative challenge, and you leave with *one* clear thing to practice. Not a homework list. One thing. (This is why my students actually practice.)

WHO IS THIS FOR

Kids, especially! I've taught plenty of them, I have endless patience, and I come fully stocked with terrible jokes. Keeping a young musician excited to come back next week is the part I'm proudest of. Complete beginners are genuinely my favorite — everything is new, everything is exciting, and I get a front row seat.

Adults who "always wanted to learn" and finally decided this is the year: welcome, I'm so glad you're here. Experienced players stuck on a plateau, songwriters who want to produce their own stuff — come on in.

No prerequisites. No auditions. Zero judgment if you can't read a single note. Lessons online or in person in Los Angeles, in English, Spanish, or German (yes, German — long story, ask me sometime). Let's make something!
