• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I have been a mentor and tutor for nearly 10 years as part of my role as Entrepreneur in Residence at a University. It was this experience that drew me further into education.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I teach all aspects of business and innovation. My own background as an entrepreneur gives me a strong focus on tutoring students to reach their goals, either by starting a business or by being an innovative and successful employee. It is these people who are going to make the world a better place and be successful as a result.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  I have a number of lecturers at University who challenged what I thought I knew about the world. They pushed me to attempt things I never thought I could and showed me a side to myself I didn't know I had.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  I think the key skill is to be able to communicate effectively. Through both intense listening and carefully individualised communication to shape what you are teaching to really reach each student in the way that works for them and gives them the success they want.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  I used to think that career success was about qualifications and promotions, but I quickly learned that it is much more about being open minded and ready to make the most of opportunities that life gives you. I once met a man on a train and a few conversations later, I was a co-owner of a very successful plastics company. I never thought I would work in the plastics industry, but it was a great opportunity and I'm so glad I was ready to take it.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  It can be frustrating when people see business and entrepreneurship as only about profit and greed. I passionately believe that instead the focus should be on creating the solutions and value that we all need to live in a better and more sustainable world.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My passion is seeing students 'awaken' into believing that they can go forward and do great things. It is so rewarding to know that there are hundreds of people who I had some small part in teaching who are now changing the world for the better (and being very successful along the way).

• What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

  I don't just give my knowledge, I work with you to bring the subject alive and help you to find your own passion and excitement about your future.
