About Ian
I am a Master’s student in Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University with a strong foundation in calculus, linear algebra, probability, and mathematical modeling. I developed my interest in mathematics through both theoretical study and applied research, including work with numerical methods and data analysis.
As a tutor, I focus on helping students who feel stuck or overwhelmed by math. Many students are told to memorize procedures, but I believe real progress comes from understanding why methods work and developing a structured way to approach problems. My goal is not just to help you finish homework, but to help you become more independent and confident in your problem solving.
I particularly enjoy working with students who:
Feel like their algebra or fundamentals are weak
Struggle to translate concepts into procedures
Experience test anxiety or frustration with math
Want to prepare for college-level mathematics
Need help organizing how to approach problems
My teaching style is patient, structured, and diagnostic. I try to quickly identify where confusion begins and then rebuild understanding step by step. I also emphasize developing problem-solving endurance, since confidence in math comes from practice with guidance rather than shortcuts.
