  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn it?

IsiZulu is my native language and I speak, write and read it fluently. I always did well in the subject at school. I've never gotten anything below a distinction which is 80% throughout high school.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Shaka Zulu is a historic character of the Zulu tribe. He was a great Zulu king born in 1787 and died in 1828. Shaka was a great warrior, a strong but brutal leader. Eventually, he was assassinated and buried in an unmarked grave.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

Yes my favourite phrase is "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" which means "I am because you are". This is a phrase that encourages humanity and unity amongst people.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It is my native language and if I cannot talk it fluently then it means I won't be able to communicate with elders in the family or community who do not understand English.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help students with the learning process?

The main difficulty or challenge with IsiZulu could be pronunciation. Certain letters such as X and Q are a challenge for people who do not speak IsiZulu to pronounce, but thorough practice always does the trick.
  • Could you share a piece of literature or another resource that could be a useful teaching aid?

When a new kitten arrives, Harold's world is turned upside down. Can Harold and Muffin learn to get along? This fun isiZulu story features two adorable pets as they learn to love each other and share their home. It can be used to help children to understand their sibling relationships. Whether children have a big brother or sister, or a new baby sibling, the story is great for talking about what they can do to get along with their family. You can also use the book during a topic on pets, in reception or in key stage one. Discuss with the children what the cats need to stay happy and healthy, such as food, toys and a bed.
  • How has travel or a specific experience helped you to increase your understanding and appreciation of the language?

Traveling has made me appreciate my language more because I've come to realise that wherever I go around my country, majority of the people understand IsiZulu as much as I wouldn't understand other languages like Venda, Xhosa, Sesotho etc the people who speak those languages also understand IsiZulu. Even Afrikaans speaking people you find that they know isiZulu so I've always been at an advantage whenever I travel because my native language is very well-known and I appreciate that.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I only produce satisfactory results with my students, all my lessons are light hearted to make the student feel comfortable. Whenever I teach, I teach my heart out, the reviews on my profile speak for themselves. I've had students from as young as 7 years old to 36, and they were all equally satisfied with my way of teaching and how their results improved after meeting me.
