About Ciarán
I'd like to say I've had an interesting journey through life so far. Since a young child, I've had a deep fascination for other languages and cultures which has brought me to some interesting places and allowed me to meet some amazing people.
My first contact with a foreign language was through a childhood friend's mother who was from the Donegal Gaeltacht originally and who really fostered an Irish-speaking environment in her home. This was later joined by some friends I made from countries like Croatia and Serbia, both living in Ireland and the Balkans, which made a formative impact on me and allowed me to really get to know the culture and speak the language. As a result of that connection, I made the decision to come live in Croatia. Specifically, I live in a mid-sized city called Osijek near the borders with Serbia, Bosnia and Hungary, and I study Croatian and Hungarian language and literature at university there.
I am a fairly laidback person but I am by no means shy and am quite outgoing when I get to know people. I always give my students 100% and really try my best to impart not just knowledge but also passion for languages on them.

Qualifications:
In terms of my qualifications, I'm currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Croatian and Hungarian language and literature at Juraj Josip Strossmayer University in Osijek, Croatia. Both degrees require different skillsets, with Croatian being more aimed at literary analysis and proof-reading, whereas Hungarian is more akin to a foreign language degree. As a result I have not only experience with multiple languages I have experience with a wide range of abilities, registers and forms of each one I've learned and how this can impact the learning process for students. I also have a TEFL certificate for English which has allowed me to become acquainted with the science of language teaching and hone my own personal approach in conjunction with practical experience learning languages.
Methodology:
As a teacher, I like to meet students where they're at and because of that, I tend to veer more into a conversational format for each lesson. However, I can also do guided lessons using textbooks or other materials relevant to the situation and, of course, appropriate to the student's level of proficiency. I like to weave in a lot of personal anecdote from my prior experiences and studies into my teaching, especially when students can relate to them. I find this to be in general more personable, and therefore, more effective than traditional rote-learning based methods that are more common in more structure programs.

He was a great student in school and actually won an award for best at both Irish and European section (French) out of 150 people! He was always willing to help me and other students out and was always very thorough with his explaining and went into depth. He’s keen to learn so his enthusiasm for knowledge is bound to run off on you too!
I have seen Ciarán’s passion and knowledge of not just Irish but of languages as a whole over the years. He has an innate understanding of the Irish language and would be an incredibly helpful, dedicated and valuable tutor to have as a student due to his love for the language.
