About Amanda

I’m Amanda, a film and television director. My credits include the BBC’s critically acclaimed Chloe and Channel 4’s iconic Skins, alongside viral commercials and meme-worthy branded content. I won the British Arrows award for Best New Director and am also a BAFTA-nominated producer. I now work as an executive producer too. I have worked with actors including Emmy winner Erin Doherty and Golden Globe winner Richard Madden, as well as exciting emerging performers and people with no previous acting experience.

Much of what I do as a director is about unpeeling scripts and finding different ways to help actors listen to each other, get into flow and work instinctively. I use a range of tools because every project and every actor is different. I bring that same care and curiosity to coaching actors and people preparing to speak in public or on camera.

I have created and led in-person and online workshops for professional actors at Spotlight and The Actors Centre, and led the Summer Screen course at Ashley Walters’ Kingdom Arts. I have also given visiting lectures and masterclasses at MetFilm School, The BRIT School and University of the Arts London, and spoken on panels at BAFTA and London Fashion Week. My work with young people includes sessions for the National Saturday Club, the Directors Charitable Foundation and Inspiring the Future.

I have taught throughout my career and trained as a coach in 2010 while taking part in the Clore Leadership Programme. I have also mentored through Creative Mentors Network and Mission Accomplished, and was nominated for Mentor of the Year at the 2023 New Voice Awards.

My approach brings together my instincts as a director, years of watching and working with performers, and my studies with inspiring teachers including Judith Weston, Paula Stevens (a Patsy Rodenburg associate and voice teacher at the Royal Shakespeare Company), Ian Sellars (National Film and Television School) and Arne Brau (National Film School of Denmark). It is also shaped by my love of improv comedy and my studies in Nervous System Mastery, which inform how I help performers feel at ease, trust their own instincts and work with greater freedom.

I started out as an actor myself, performing at university in devised student plays and comedy productions. These included work that went to the Edinburgh Festival and won the Vision and Risk award at the National Student Drama Festival. I hold a BA and MA from Cambridge University.

I’m enhanced DBS checked through both my volunteer and directing work, and am safeguarding trained.

Sessions are practical and shaped around what you want to work on. You might have an audition coming up, a scene you want to explore or a presentation you’re nervous about giving.

For actors, we work with your chosen material, exploring what’s happening beneath the dialogue, what your character wants and their relationships with others. We try different approaches, with time to experiment and discover what works. I help you make clear choices, listen and respond, and feel less self-conscious on camera. I also desmistify the casting process and how to help enjoy auditions, whatever the outcome.

For presentation coaching, bring a pitch, speech or presentation you need to deliver. We work on pace, clarity and connecting with your audience, with time to rehearse and address the moments you find difficult.

I offer clear, honest feedback in a supportive environment, drawing on my experience directing professional actors and people who have never performed before.

Sessions last 60 minutes and take place online. I welcome adults and young people, including beginners, acting students, professional actors and people seeking help with presentations or speaking on camera. No previous acting experience is needed.

Sessions for young people are adapted to their age and experience. I’m enhanced DBS checked through my volunteer work and safeguarding trained.
