About Mark

I have been a professional tutor for 22 years and live in London.

Much of my work now involves working as a consultant, managing other tutors, and working with children who need some form of quick intervention to get them back on track. I do take on a few students for more traditional tutoring each term, as this is the work I enjoy the most!

I travel a great deal and am lucky enough to tutor all over the world. I work on a sliding pay scale and my clients range from royal families to children living in inner-city council estates. Over the last eight years I have spent an increasing amount of time working in schools where a substantial number of the children qualify for free school meals. I find this work hugely rewarding and many of my fellow tutors have found themselves doing the same thing as a result.

My main specialism is working in Maths and Sciences up to GCSE, as well as all subjects for school entrance (11+ and 13+) for both British and US school systems.

I wasn't a natural mathematician at school, and my maths reports would say things like "he's not even trying!". In hindsight, I see that my teachers may never have struggled in their own work, and thus found it hard to understand why I wasn't getting it. Those of us who became overwhelmed must have appeared to them as just being lazy.

My university lecturers (whilst studying physics) were so inspiring that I started to understand the areas I'd struggled in for so many years. In fact, I found myself getting a little annoyed that Maths hadn't been taught like this to me earlier.

I am also dyslexic, and although I have been able to overcome this, my own struggle ended up becoming a strength in my tutoring. I found it easier to empathise with my students, many who were in the same position as I had been as child. I began teaching them methods that I'd found useful myself.

After two years I moved over to studying a degree in Communications. I found this course hugely beneficial in learning to communicate more effectively with my students.

It is my belief that unless there is a more serious problem, any child can do well at school. They are inherently brilliant, proven by their ability to master a large number of skills that enable them to function as a human being in relatively short amount of time!

The job of a tutor is to unlock whatever it is that's blocking them from getting there. Sometimes you are explaining something in a way that they can understand, and sometimes you are functioning as a mentor to guide them through a tricky time in their lives. Once you can demonstrate that it's possible to master the skills necessary to succeed, most students start to make the leaps for themselves.

Nothing gives me more pleasure than telling a parent that their son or daughter no longer requires any extra help. Not only has this been good for personal recommendations, but it makes my own work a whole lot more fulfilling.

If I can help you find a great tutor, or you want to ask anything, please do get in touch!

My lessons are primarily focussed on unblocking the learning of my students. Initially we start with an assessment of what's required, and then after developing a plan, I work with my students to help them achieve mastery of Maths, English and Science.

Whilst I never promise my students they will love the subject, they often end up enjoying the subjects we do together. I certainly wasn't a natural student, and over the past 22 years of tutoring I've come to love the subjects I teach. I've also found ways to help transfer my self-developed enthusiasm to my students.
