About Enrico
I graduated from Imperial College and UCL, co-authored a textbook on classical mechanics, published research in major academic journals, and completed a PhD in Informatics.
Still, out of everything I have done in academia, the thing I enjoyed the most was teaching.
I am passionate about maths, whether it is applied to physics, informatics, or, as in most of my own work, a combination of both.
I strongly believe maths becomes much easier once you figure out how to make it fun.
More than almost any other STEM subject, maths can feel like a game. You are given a set of rules, and the interesting part is figuring out what you can do with them. In a game, those rules might determine how you can move, what actions you can take, and how the environment works. In maths, the same idea applies: once the rules are clear, you can start experimenting, finding patterns, and working out what follows from them.
When you start seeing maths this way, even a boring exam or coursework question can become a problem to play with rather than something you just have to get through.
And that changes a lot. You understand more, remember more, and become much more confident when faced with a problem you have never seen before.
Then, all of a sudden, that exam you were worried about is behind you, you have got into your dream university programme, and you are one step closer to the job you actually want.

You don't need to come to a lesson already knowing exactly what is wrong or what kind of help you need.
Maybe you have one exam that you cannot seem to pass. Maybe you have started a dissertation and have no idea whether you are going in the right direction. Maybe you understand physics intuitively but get lost as soon as the maths appears. Or perhaps you have been told that a topic is "easy" so many times that you are now wondering why it doesn't feel easy to you.
We can figure that out together and build the lessons around it.
**Personalised course design**
I will design our lessons around what you actually want to achieve.
A few years ago, I co-authored a classical mechanics textbook and designed a short course based on that textbook for final-year high-school students.
During my PhD, I first prepared introductory material for a course on mathematics for complex systems. I then helped design a course on data science and delivered specialist lectures on network science, Bayesian inference and stochastic block modelling. More recently, I prepared tutorials for MSc students so that they could develop the mathematical and computational skills they needed for their dissertations.
This experience means that I am very comfortable taking a large or difficult topic, breaking it into manageable pieces, and designing a path through it based on your level and your goal, whether it is passing an exam, learning a new topic, or finishing your thesis/dissertation.
**Dissertation and project support**
Working on a dissertation, final-year project or report can be extremely tough and demoralising.
First, you are not sure whether what you are doing is interesting. After you work on it for a while — or ask ChatGPT — you start wondering whether what you are doing is trivial, or whether it makes any sense at all. Finally, all of a sudden, you only have a couple of weeks left and writing now seems impossible.
I have not only gone through all of this myself, but helped students go through it and achieve high grades.
Importantly, I have marked over 1000 university exams and reports. I know what a marker is looking for, and, most importantly, I know how to help you show a marker why your work deserves a high grade — while making sure you can still enjoy your project rather than letting it become your worst university memory.
**Thesis/dissertation writing**
You have done all the work, read lots of papers, and your results look awesome. However, as soon as you start writing your abstract and introduction, you feel lost.
It takes a full day to write a paragraph, and the day after you change it because ChatGPT told you it didn't make sense. Your supervisor is not answering your emails or doesn't have time to read your drafts.
Writing is VERY hard, and having a fellow human to discuss your work with can make an enormous difference.
I have extensive experience writing and reviewing academic drafts, and I have supported MSc data science students as they worked on their dissertations. I can help you organise your ideas, understand what belongs in each section, communicate technical work clearly, and develop a piece of writing that actually represents the work you have done.
**Different learners need different approaches**
Does your intuition work best when you can visualise the maths? Or perhaps you think very abstractly.
Do you prefer being challenged and trying to find the solution yourself, or would you rather go through a solution in detail, explore all the possible variations, and understand exactly why each step works?
Do you understand the material when studying but struggle to remember your own notes during an exam? Do you underperform because the exam suddenly requires one very specific thing you didn't think you needed to memorise?
With my experience as an Associate Fellow of Advance HE, I understand these issues and will adapt to the way you learn. I can also help you figure out what kind of learning works best for you and test different strategies until we find one that works — whether your goal is understanding a difficult topic, completing a project, or finally nailing that exam you have been struggling with.
