About Alex
Hi my name is Alex, Ms. Kemsley, or Coach! I've heard all three in the variety of positions I've worked in.
I graduated from an academically rigorous high school with a 3.8 GPA, where I was required to write a thesis and earned multiple college scholarships. I then pursued a B.A. in Humanities and a minor in Museum Studies at The King's College in New York City. While in college I was working as a T.A. for a 200-level Research Writing course, where I helped students refine their analysis, grammar, and comprehensive writing skills.
Post-graduate, I taught AP Art History a charter school, achieving a 60% pass rate through engaging lesson plans and interactive learning. I still keep in touch with several of my students.
Currently, I work for a local nonprofit called Chain Reaction, which holistically supports high school students in achieving their secondary goals.
I’m dedicated to helping students excel through hands-on learning and personalized feedback, fostering both confidence and academic growth.

My Teaching Method
-Interactive, discussion-based sessions that encourage students to engage critically with the material.
-Real-world connections, especially in history, linking lessons to modern culture and current events.
-Focused on skill-building for students with a basic understanding of grammar, helping them develop advanced writing and analysis.
-Detailed feedback on written work, guiding students to refine their ideas and strengthen their skills.
Typical Lesson Plan
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)
-Quick review or a warm-up activity to get students thinking. -This could be a question to gauge their understanding or spark curiosity about the day’s topic.
2. Core Lesson with Activity (30 minutes)
-Introduce the main topic (literature passage, historical event, grammar concept, etc.) and dive into it with an activity.
-For example:
-Literature/History: Analyze a primary source or passage, discuss themes, or role-play historical events.
-Writing/Grammar: Work on a structured writing prompt, craft sentences, or edit together.
-Encourage students to take an active role and apply what they learn immediately, making the lesson interactive and dynamic.
3. Focused Feedback (15 minutes)
-Spend time reviewing the student’s work from the activity, discussing strengths and areas to refine.
-Provide constructive feedback, focusing on specific improvements and reinforcing key skills.
-Set clear next steps based on the feedback, so students know exactly what to work on.
4. Wrap-Up and Next Steps (5 minutes)
-Summarize the lesson’s main points and provide a small takeaway or thought-provoking question.
-Offer a follow-up task or topic for reflection, preparing them for the next session.
What Sets Me Apart
What sets me apart as a tutor is my commitment to interactive, activity-based learning and personalized feedback. I design sessions to be hands-on, helping students actively engage with material through tailored exercises and discussions that deepen understanding. By focusing on each student's unique needs, I provide specific, constructive feedback that builds their confidence and skills. My supportive, encouraging approach ensures that students feel comfortable exploring ideas, making mistakes, and ultimately growing as independent thinkers. This combination of practical activities and targeted feedback helps students not only improve but also enjoy the learning process.
Who the Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for high school students, dual-enrolled students, entry-level college students, and those taking AP classes. I work best with students who have a basic understanding of grammar and are ready to build advanced skills in literature, writing, reading comprehension, and history. Whether preparing for AP exams, transitioning to college-level work, or seeking deeper academic growth, my approach provides the feedback and engagement needed to excel.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Been friends with Alex for a number of years now. Through college she was always one of the most educated people I knew. Knowledgeable in many different topics, especially Art History, and was always ready to help out a fellow classmate. I know she has helped me many times in the past, and she will certainly help anyone else. Couldn’t recommend someone more for History or Art History.
Alex helped our high school student pass his AP Art History Test. Her teaching style is professional and effective and left my child feeling more and more confident with not just his Art History class but with school in general. She not only works to help them succeed in her area of expertise, but gives them the learning and studying tools to carry with them through high school and beyond. We would highly recommend her!
