About Dr Christina

I have completed an ESRC-funded PhD in Psychology at the University of Birmingham focused on individual differences in adults' socio-cognitive abilities. I have previously studied at the University of Cambridge where I completed a research-based Master's degree in Psychology and I have obtained a BPS-accredited First-Class Honours Degree in Psychology at the University of Aberdeen. I have published my research in peer-reviewed academic journals and have over 8 years' experience in tutoring pupils and university students in Psychology (including statistics and research methods). During my PhD, I have also taught university modules for psychology undergraduate students, and marked their assignments as an examiner. In addition, I offer proofreading and individualised feedback to personal statements for university admissions.

  • 1. When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in psychology began during my school years when I was studying pedagogy. This interest grew during my undergraduate studies at the University of Aberdeen, where I appreciated the evidence-based and scientific nature of psychology. Private tutoring naturally evolved as an extension of my passion for sharing knowledge, starting with mentoring and leading peer-assisted learning sessions during my university years. Over time, I developed a deeper appreciation for helping students overcome challenges and achieve academic success, which became a key focus of my career.
  • 2. Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach psychology exclusively at university level, focusing on areas such as research methods, statistics, data analysis (using SPSS, JAMOVI, JASP, and R), as well as essay writing, dissertation work and helping students prepare for interviews and viva examinations. I particularly enjoy helping students to develop their own research projects and to see them grow as researchers throughout the process of conducting a dissertation project.
  • 3. Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I was inspired by some of my teachers at school, my undergraduate supervisor at Aberdeen University and my PhD supervisors. Their dedication to excellent research practice and mentorship has paved the way for me to have a deep sense of how to exhibit these valuable qualities with my own students.
  • 4. What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be academically highly capable of the subject their tutor, but, crucially, this needs to be combined with patience, empathy, reliability, constructive honesty and a genuine investment for seeing one's students succeed. Strong communication skills such as the ability to break down complex concepts into understandable terms are equally important. Additionally, being approachable and supportive fosters a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as part of their learning journey.
  • 5. Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my undergraduate degree, I conducted a study on age-related differences in decoding intentions from non-literal language, which involved recruiting and testing participants from diverse age groups. Explaining the study's purpose to older adults in a non-technical way taught me the importance of appropriate communication and enhanced my ability to talk to diverse populations about complex topics in a way that they find engaging and understandable.
  • 6. What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One challenge I've faced is ensuring students feel confident tackling statistics and research methods. Many students find these areas daunting, but I strive to demystify them by providing clear, practical examples and fostering a supportive learning environment. Another challenge is keeping up with advances in psychological research and software, which requires continuous learning to stay updated and provide the best guidance to students.
  • 7. Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about empowering students to achieve their academic potential. I find great fulfilment in helping students navigate challenging topics, particularly data analysis and undergoing the process of completing a dissertation. Outside of teaching, I am actively involved in publishing my own research. I am also passionate about speaking multiple languages and travelling.
  • 8. What makes you a Superprof?

My unique combination of academic achievements, including an ESRC-funded PhD and degrees from prestigious universities, and over eight years of teaching experience sets me apart. My dedication to tailoring sessions to individual needs, expertise in research and data analysis, and commitment to providing constructive feedback ensure my students receive premium-quality guidance.
