About Joan
I am certified to teach English as a second language, and I previously worked with the state to teach English to refugees. Since then, I have become an author and published four novels, and I am an avid reader. I have also had many exchange students and worked with them on their English, spoken and written.

When I would teach the refugees, the first thing I would do is test their English proficiency in speaking, writing, and reading. Once I knew how each of them performed, I would plan my lesson around the individuals with the lowest scores, as they had all previously tested into intermediate English at the school. I found that the best way to teach was with stories. I would have them write stories and then read them to the class. After everyone had done that, I would ask the other students if they could point out the mistakes. Then, I would tell them what the mistakes were and write them on the board, providing answers and explanations as to why they were wrong, the correct way to write it, and why that was correct. The thing I liked the most about my job was the students. They were incredibly energetic, excited to learn, and a lot of fun to be around.
