About Kirsten
I am a practising Head of Art and Design with extensive experience teaching GCSE Art.
I have taught OCR Art & Design for around eight years and have experience teaching both GCSE and A Level. I regularly assess and standardise GCSE portfolios and have taken part in moderation training and cross-school moderation.
As a Head of Art, I have seen a very wide range of portfolios and understand the difference between work that simply looks attractive and work that actually meets the assessment criteria successfully.
My approach is supportive, practical and straightforward. I want students to leave each session knowing exactly what they should do next rather than feeling overwhelmed by their portfolio.
I am particularly good at supporting students who:
are unsure how to move their project forward
have lots of unfinished work
struggle with annotation or artist research
have been told they need to “develop ideas” but do not know how
are aiming for the higher grades and need help refining their portfolio
have lost confidence in Art.

I offer online GCSE and A level Art tutoring for students who need support developing their coursework, improving their portfolio, understanding the Assessment Objectives or preparing for Component 2.
Rather than traditional drawing lessons, my sessions focus on helping students understand how to improve their GCSE or A Level Art grade while still keeping their work personal and individual.
I can help with:
GCSE Art or A level coursework and portfolio development
AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4
Artist research and meaningful annotation
Developing ideas rather than simply copying images
Experimentation with materials and techniques
Improving sketchbook pages and presentation
Creating stronger links between artists and personal work
Planning and developing final outcomes
Component 2 / externally set assignment preparation
Catch-up plans for students who have fallen behind
Full portfolio reviews with clear priorities for improvement
Students can send photographs of their current portfolio before the lesson so that our time can be focused specifically on the areas that will make the biggest difference.
I also offer one-off portfolio reviews for students who do not need regular tuition. I can review the whole portfolio and provide clear, honest feedback on what is working well, what is currently limiting the grade and what I would prioritise next.
