Michael "Kumu Malulani" Odegaard engages his students in multimedia activities that reinforce grammatical lessons taught, gradually incorporating increasing levels of Hawaiian language in his instruction. He begins his first term by teaching the basic grammatical patterns that comprise 80% of Hawaiian conversations; subsequent terms add breadth of grammatical patterns so that haumāna become increasingly articulate poets and conversationalists. Malulani employs several online resources to encourage awareness & expansion of his studentsʻ Hawaiian language opportunities.
"Nā Kai ʻEwalu" textbooks are published in two volumes available at the Hale Kuamoʻo at a cost of approximately $30 each; additionally, students are required to bring small white boards & dry-erase pens of assorted colors for in-class exercises.
Depending on their level of motivation, the "Nā Kai ʻEwalu" curriculum in English can take between one and four years for a student to complete. Kumu Malulani facilitates learning at whatever level of motivation his students may have to gain their fluency, however they must commit to at least one lesson per week with two hours of study between lessons.
At the end of each term, students will demonstrate what they have learned at an entertaining "Hōʻike" celebration. After completing 27 chapters of the "Nā Kai ʻEwalu" curriculum in English, students will review the same lessons in a Hawaiian immersion learning environment and begin to study published readings as well as give short speeches on a regular basis. Advanced student curriculum will include more sophisticated grammatical patterns as well as listening/transcribing recorded conversations to recognize and comprehend the variety of speaking styles represented among Hawaiian speakers as well as various writing & speech-giving projects to develop studentsʻ confidence in their communication and impromptu conversational skills.
