About Timothy
I bring extensive academic teaching experience to my tutoring, having taught mathematics at both Oxford and Southampton universities. This has given me particular insight into effective one-to-one teaching methods. As a former postdoctoral researcher, I understand how to break down complex mathematical concepts and build strong foundational understanding.
For mathematics, my university teaching experience spans from first-year undergraduates through to advanced pure mathematics. I've maintained my teaching skills through private tutoring, focusing recently on helping family and friends' children excel in their studies. This combination of high-level academic experience and individual tutoring has honed my ability to explain complex concepts clearly at any level.
In Latin, I've successfully guided students through both GCSE and A-Level work, using structured approaches that emphasise understanding rather than just exam preparation.
My teaching style focuses on building strong grammatical foundations while making connections to modern languages. I maintain professional standards in all my teaching, providing structured lessons, clear communication, and regular feedback. I am in the process of obtaining an updated enhanced DBS certificate and can provide academic references from my university teaching career.

As a former academic researcher, I bring rigorous understanding and proven teaching methods to both mathematics and Latin. For university or A-level mathematics, I focus on building deep conceptual understanding alongside practical problem-solving skills.
Sessions typically begin with concept review, followed by worked examples and increasingly challenging problems. My research background allows me to explain complex mathematical concepts clearly. I can support a wide range of pure and applied mathematics, and statistics.
In Latin, I use a structured approach combining traditional grammar with reading practice, suitable for students aged 8-18 working towards GCSE or A-Level standard. Each lesson incorporates vocabulary, grammar, and translation practice. I work mainly from the "So You Really Want to Learn Latin?" series and focus on learning the language rather than qualifications, but I can also support exam preparation. Students will need to produce homework and learn grammar and vocab by rote. I enhance learning by drawing attention to common roots of words, making it particularly beneficial for students who are also learning or have learned Latin-based modern languages. All lessons are tailored to individual needs, whether preparing for specific exams or building general competency.
