About Matteo

Most students are taught to memorize formulas.

I teach students how to think.

I am a neuroscientist and biomedical engineer at Harvard, where I use mathematics, physics, electronics, signal processing, statistics, and programming every day to study the human brain and develop new technologies for neurological and psychiatric disorders. I hold a PhD in Translational Neuroengineering and have spent my career applying quantitative methods to solve real-world scientific and engineering challenges.

Over the years, I have taught and mentored students from high school to PhD level. To further improve my teaching, I completed the Harvard Bok Center Certificate in Teaching, an evidence-based program focused on how students learn, how to identify misconceptions, and how to promote critical thinking and long-term understanding. This experience reinforced a principle that guides all of my lessons: effective teaching is not about transmitting information, but about helping students develop the ability to reason independently.

Many students struggle because they are asked to memorize procedures without understanding the ideas behind them. My goal is to change that. Rather than focusing solely on finding the correct answer, I help students understand why a method works, when it should be applied, and what its limitations are. Once the concepts become clear, the mathematics becomes much easier.

My lessons combine intuition, rigorous reasoning, and practical problem solving. I frequently use diagrams, visual explanations, animations, simulations, and real-world examples to transform abstract concepts into ideas that are easier to understand and remember. I encourage students to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and actively engage with the material rather than passively follow a set of steps.

I can help with:

• Mathematics (high school through university level)
• Probability and Statistics
• Physics
• Electronics and Biomedical Engineering core courses
• MATLAB and Python Programming

My objective is simple: not only to help you succeed in your next exam, but to help you develop the confidence, intuition, and critical-thinking skills that will serve you throughout your academic and professional career.

STEM subjects can be challenging, but they don't have to be intimidating. With the right guidance, even the most complex concepts can become clear, logical, and intuitive.

Whether you're preparing for an exam, working through assignments, filling gaps in your understanding, or aiming to excel in your studies, I will help you build a deep understanding of the material and the confidence to solve problems independently.

My teaching philosophy goes beyond memorizing formulas and procedures. I believe that true learning comes from understanding the underlying principles, questioning assumptions, and developing the critical-thinking skills needed to tackle unfamiliar problems. Rather than focusing solely on obtaining the correct answer, I encourage students to understand why a method works, when it should be applied, and what its limitations are.

Every lesson is tailored to your goals, background, and learning style. I use intuitive explanations, visual aids, diagrams, animations, and real-world examples to transform abstract mathematical and scientific concepts into ideas that are easier to understand and remember. By connecting theory with practical applications, students develop a stronger intuition and a more lasting understanding of the material.

Together, we will identify knowledge gaps, strengthen your foundations, and develop a structured approach to problem solving. My goal is not only to help you achieve better grades, but also to help you become a more confident, independent, and analytical thinker who can successfully tackle new challenges long after the lesson is over.
