About Radhika

Online school has been challenging for parents who are required to juggle between their daily chores, jobs, and helping their children out with studies. And many parents hope for their children to learn independently without depending excessively on them. Here are a few tips to help your child learn more independently.

Encourage reading for leisure
Children who struggle to read usually feel discouraged when it comes to learning. If your child is in the lower classes, first encourage him/her to read leisurely with interesting story books. You could also organise ‘Family reading time’ to boost confidence.

2. Prioritise learning and not performance

Children tend to be deterred when parents pressurize them to perform well. Focus on encouraging your child to make learning a habit without urging them to answer all your questions correctly. Correct their mistakes and encourage them to keep learning. Their performance is bound to improve once they start learning without feeling pressured.

3. Reward their efforts

Children learn best when they look forward to learning. You could build a positive connection with study-time by rewarding their efforts with a little snack or extra play time.

4. Step back and let them learn from their mistakes

Parents could understandably have a hard time stepping back. But if you would like your child to be more independent you’ll have to trust him/her to do well by making their own mistakes and learning from them. This is a very important step in creating independent learners.

5. Create a study schedule

Build a time table for your child to follow. It does not have to be too rigorous. Just make sure they spend enough time across subjects to stay on top of what they are learning at school. This will help make learning a habit.

6. Create opportunities for active learning

When children learn-by-doing they develop a deep understanding of concepts. Engage your child in learning games and a more hands-on way of studying to make them fall in love with learning. And if you love learning, you will end up learning on your own i.e. independently!
