About Fergus
I am an enthusiastic and at times unorthodox teacher. I believe in truly understanding the way each individual approaches a subject, and then diagnosing specific weaknesses to encourage fast development. I am a firm advocate for establishing a broad understanding, and then specifying, is the best method of gaining relevant and meaningful skillsets within a subject beyond just memorisation.
Students should expect to learn broadly and creatively, and to find value in the unexpected and to trust their intuitions and imaginations.
I am personally most drawn to drama and poetry, either classical or contemporary, as well as classic literature.

The lessons will be dependent on your learning objectives and level of study. I am happy to receive text requests and provide case-specific lessons on that text (prose, poetry, or drama). At first, study will lead to verbal discussion and presentation of ideas. We will then work on how to take those ideas and present them in written form, in a convincing and stylish way. I believe for literature it is important that the ideas are internalised and fully grasped first, so that the writing becomes more inevitable and systematic. My approach entertains the creative, free thinking space necessary for the interpretation of text, before encouraging clarified and well executed argumentation in essay or presentation form.
I am happy to cater my lesson length and lesson plan specifically to each individual student. It is important to me that my lessons are bespoke and encourage any student's individuality and learning style.
