About Debi
My name is Debi Ray-Chaudhuri. I grew up in a typical math/science household as my father is an immigrant from India and a mathematician of some repute. I spent two summers studying number theory, one summer studying at the Telluride Association Summer Programm at Cornell. I studied for 2 years at Cornell, moved to Berlin and switched to studying art. While in Germany, I realized that I wished to become an artist. I completed my Bachelor of fine arts at Ohio State university. I was accepted in the Masters program at the School of Art. I was an artist in residence at the Asian American Arts Center, a scholarship recipient at the Skowhegan school of Painting and Sculpture, and a participant in the Whitney Independent Study Program. I have studied Cinematography at NYU and have experience with Digital Media. I am good at assessing the skill level of my students and providing appropriate exercises to build on a student’s strength. I am patient and a good listener.

Art, like mathematics, music and chess is similar to a language in that there are “rules” but there is no limit on the expression those rules can create. The language of Chess is pattern, of Mathematics axioms, of music time and silence and not silence. All these human endeavors are best taught by human beings. While there are no guarantees of success there is always the guarantee of creating a practice that stays with you forever.
