About John
I am an English Literature doctoral candidate, working on a modern literature thesis. During my undergraduate degree, I specialised in medieval studies, Shakespeare, and modernism, attaining First Class Honours. As a tutor, a student, and a writer, I am passionate about literature and language, and hope to meet engaged, driven students of all ages who are looking to develop their interest in their subject. As a mature graduate, I have a special interest in mature and other non-standard students, because I want to help make education accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

My classes are always discussion-led, in order to engage with students and encourage them to tell me what they thought of texts. This approach helps students to build on these initial impressions, formulating them into critical analyses through the exchange of ideas. Writing exercises can be useful, and I do teach classes on essay writing, however reading and then talking about what we have read is always the start of reaching a point of real understanding.

I have been a tutor for over 10 years, working with students across humanities subjects up to the postgraduate level.
