About Lily
My name is Lily and I have a Bachelor's degree in German and Italian from the University of Cambridge. I love my subject because it combines all the things I’m interested in: I get to develop a deeper understanding of European culture through great literature, film and art, but I also have the more technical side of my degree with grammar and translation, which provides a change from the essays! I found my A Levels and applying to university challenging, but my experience was made much easier by the academic support I got from my teachers at school and my German tutor, who helped to give me much needed confidence in my German speaking skills. I found all this guidance invaluable and would really love to pass this on to students who are in a similar position. Aside from my degree, my great passion is music: I sing in a choir, have run an a cappella group and taken part in several operas whilst at university.

There is no universal way of learning or revising, and that’s why my lessons will be tailored to each individual student. Whether you want to focus on exam skills, essay writing or even oral practice, we will discuss this before every session to make sure that your problem areas are being targeted effectively. During the sessions, we will use pre-prepared material which I will provide, and I will make sure to ask you frequently throughout the session if the pace is okay, if I’m explaining things clearly enough and if what we are doing is helpful. My lessons are typically 50 minutes to 1 hour long, though I am happy to discuss what works best for you and adjust accordingly. I have been tutoring students online since my second year of university, so for the past five years. I have tutored students in a range of subjects, including English, History, Music and German. I have typically tutored students between the ages of 11 and 18, but I am happy to work with students over the age of 18. What I’ve learnt from my own experience with exams is that it is so important to use all the resources provided by the exam board, including the specification and past mark schemes. We will refer to these throughout our sessions to make sure you achieve the grades you need. However, I also learnt that a genuine interest in the subject is vital, as weeks of revision can easily become boring and uninspiring otherwise. Therefore, we will also focus on achieving a broader perspective on your subject, working on developing your own opinions for essay subjects and identifying areas of interest for further investigation outside of the lessons. This type of learning is also very important for university applications, as universities love to see that you’ve taken an interest in a subject outside of the curriculum.
