About Hugo
I’m a professional drummer and musician based in New York City, originally from Geneva, Switzerland. I graduated from The New School with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance, where I had the chance to study with and learn from musicians such as Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, Lenny White, Johnathan Blake, Kendrick Scott, Vicente Archer, and Jimmy Owens.
Since moving to New York, I’ve played in many different settings and venues, including Smalls Jazz Club, Ornithology, Arthur’s Tavern, and The Bitter End, as well as touring internationally. Playing with different musicians and in different styles has taught me to be adaptable, listen carefully, communicate, and always stay open to learning. I bring that same experience and professionalism into my teaching.
I take teaching seriously, but I also want lessons to feel relaxed and enjoyable. I learned much of my own music intuitively, through listening, playing by ear, and experimenting, and this continues to influence the way I teach. I believe that while strong fundamentals and technique are important, learning an instrument should also feel natural, creative, and personal. I encourage my students to listen, explore, and develop their own musical voice. Most importantly, I want to share the joy and passion that music has brought to my own life and help pass that passion on to the next generation in a positive and encouraging environment.

My teaching approach is highly adaptable and centered around each student’s level, learning style, goals, and musical interests. I believe there is no single way to learn the drums, so I adjust my methods to help each student develop their own voice while building strong fundamentals.
A typical lesson starts with a warm-up, followed by technical exercises focusing on coordination, control, and sound. We then move into the musical side of drumming through songs, grooves, time, feel, dynamics, and overall musicality. Depending on the student, we can also work on reading, improvisation, or specific techniques.
What sets my approach apart is my focus on making technique serve the music. Having learned much of music intuitively and by ear, I encourage students to develop their listening, creativity, and musical instincts alongside their technique.
My lessons are for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced players, and can be adapted to different goals, whether learning for fun, preparing for auditions, or developing as a serious musician.
