Introduction to Epidemiology: How Diseases Spread

Level

Beginner – Undergraduate / Adult learners / Public health students

Duration

60 minutes

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Define epidemiology and explain its importance in public health.
2. Understand basic concepts such as incidence, prevalence, and risk factors.
3. Describe how epidemiologists investigate disease outbreaks.
4. Apply epidemiologic thinking to real-world health events.

Lesson Outline

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
• Brief introduction to epidemiology.
• Why epidemiology matters for global health, policy, and prevention.
• Real-world example: the role of epidemiology during the **COVID-19 pandemic.

Discussion Question:
Why do you think some diseases spread faster than others?

2. Core Concepts (20 minutes)

Key Terms
• Incidence – number of new cases in a population during a time period
• Prevalence – total number of cases in a population
• Risk factor – characteristic that increases disease likelihood
• Outbreak – sudden increase in disease cases

Example Activity

Students analyze a simple dataset:

Population: 10,000 people
New flu cases this month: 200

Question:
What is the incidence rate?

3. Case Study (20 minutes)

Case study: Foodborne illness outbreak investigation.

Students learn how epidemiologists:
1. Identify cases
2. Trace exposure sources
3. Test hypotheses
4. Implement prevention measures

Example historical case:
The 1854 Broad Street cholera outbreak investigation by John Snow.

Students examine a map of cases and identify the likely source.

4. Interactive Exercise (5–10 minutes)

Students answer:
• What might cause an outbreak in a university dormitory?
• What interventions could stop it?

Examples:
• vaccination
• quarantine
• improved sanitation

5. Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

Key takeaways:
• Epidemiology helps identify patterns of disease.
• Data drives public health decisions.
• Prevention strategies depend on understanding transmission.

Homework (Optional)

Students read about the eradication of Smallpox and write a short paragraph explaining how epidemiology contributed to global eradication.
