About Madison

I'm a Law and Spanish graduate (going on to do a masters in September!) Law with Spanish degree. I've been tutoring English students for nearly 2 years both privately and through a school referral scheme. I really enjoy tutoring English as I am definitely a bookworm, and, as I know that many students struggle to understand and enjoy the texts that assigned to them (Shakespeare is particularly hated by my current pupils!), I find it extremely rewarding to teach English in a much more accessible way to GCSE and A-Level students, so hopefully they can enjoy it as much as I do! My particular favourite texts (and the ones that I've studied in the most depth) are Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', Charlotte Brontë's 'Jane Eyre' and F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'.

About the lesson

I'm a Law and Spanish graduate, and scored A* in both English Literature and Language GCSE, going on to obtain an A at A-level English Literature. I am able to tutor students of all abilities, and have also had some experience with working with students with learning difficulties. My main focus when teaching is building confidence and understanding, as, in my experience, a lack of confidence and ability to understand texts (particularly the Classics) can cause students to feel like they aren't going able to achieve the marks that they really want - I assure you, this is not the case! I typically like to focus on building confidence by developing exam skills through working with exam papers and mark schemes alongside studying example answers. I also combine this with engaging and fun conversations about the texts in order to develop analytical skills as well as introduce more advanced ideas, such as relevant contextual references. Lessons with me usually last 1 hour, but if a pupil felt like they would prefer a longer lesson, for example, if they want a longer revision session the day before their exam, I am more than happy to do this as well.
