About David

I am in my final year of electrical engineering at QUT. I graduated high school in 2012 and have achieved High Distinctions in university maths units. I can tutor topics involving, but not limited to:
1. Simple Algebra (from solving equations and graphing)
2. Advanced Algebra (solving systems of equations, matrices, comics, financial)
2. Geometry (from Euclidean constructions to transformations)
3. Trigonometry (unit circle, vectors, trigonometric identities, complex numbers)
4. Calculus (ODEs, differentiation rules, integration problems (like integration by parts and substitution), Fourier Transforms, Taylor series, etc)

Currently, I am working on two engineering projects. One involves improving iris recognition systems by using neural networks (specifically a Scattering Network). This includes a network of complex Morlet Wavelets. In the scope of high-school maths, we use special 2D derivatives to encode geometric information with features of the iris.

My second project is on building a vibration diagnosis tool for a mechanic's workshop. In high school terms, this converts vibrations to digital information and calculates numerous statistics to determine if the vibrations represent a fault or not.

I am a QUT electrical engineering honours student. I love working in computer vision and inspiring young minds to choose careers in STEM.

I am on this site to gain experience for my life goal of retiring as a high school math teacher. My teaching methodology is constantly evolving and depends on the needs of the student. My priorities with the student are:
1. Nurture a passing understanding of the concepts.
2. Explore advanced MAPS problems.
3. Assist with assessment work.
4. Inspire enjoyment in mathematics.

Before we engage we need to set expectations and I'll need to know the required topics so I can prepare.

[EXTRA]
For students that are interested, I will attempt to inspire a broader appreciation of the mathematics they're learning. Two ways I will do this will be by showing how the maths we're working on fits into later concepts and real-world uses.

For example, if our topic was trigonometric identities, normally a pretty boring topic, as an extra I'd mention that trigonometric identities help you simplify impossible integration problems in later classes and that one is the backbone of the FM radio system. If the student was interested I could explain how we could build a radio signal adding three digital voice recordings, where two have been multiplied by cos(ft). They should know what cos, f and t are from the trigonometric identity topic we are working on. I could then show them the trigonometric identity that powers this.
